This story is unusual, but true!
The story behind these two Battling Bucks goes like this. They were all locked up in battle, physically locked up when a client of mine shot one of the two deer, he had heard'em all morning, antlers rattling together, tearing up the brush and just go'in nuts, he finally couldn't take it any more so he comes down out of his tree stand and slipped up on'em.
What he saw was a life and death battle between two huge bucks. Battling it out for the breeding and territorial rights to their area, as they do every year when they go into rut.
He took aim with his rifle, while they were still all locked up in battle and shot one deer. When he shot, the one deer fell dead, the thing is, they were still tangled together. The other deer could not get loose from the one he had been fighting with, so it took off backwards through the woods dragging the dead deer with it. Now this upsets the hunter, seeing his prize being dragged off to who knows where. So this guy runs back to camp as fast as he can to try and get some help to come back and get his deer.
His cousin was hunting in the same deer camp but wasn't in camp when he got there so he couldn't find him. He goes back to where he had shot his deer, but by that time the deer had regained it's composure and when he saw and heard the hunter coming, he gets up and starts dragging the still locked-up dead deer with him through the woods. Both still hopelessly locked together. Again our hunter started chasing the deer through the woods trying to keep from losing his trophy buck he had just shot. Finally it gave out again and stopped dragging the stone dead, entangled buck. It just lay there panting from exhaustion.
Our hunter goes back to camp and this time leaves a note for his cousin, and then rushes back to where he had left the two deer, and same story, the deer is rested and takes off again through the woods with the dead deer still locked in his antlers. Picture this. The deer is backing through the woods as fast as it can, dragging the other deer his own size with him and this guy is chasing them both not knowing what he should do.
Finally, after about an hour or so, his cousin, after reading the note that was left him, starts looking for him and the deer he's been chasing. They find each other and his cousin shoots the other deer. They said it took them about an hour or so to get the deer unlocked.
He asks his cousin, “Why didn't you just shoot the other deer? ” He said. " I only had one deer tag." Kind of an unusual story, strange, but it's true.
